1. The Origin of the Name
The name “Mercedes” comes from a girl named Mercedes Jellinek, the daughter of an Austrian businessman who was heavily involved in developing the brand’s early vehicles.
The Jellinek family was so instrumental in the brand’s success that they eventually changed their surname to “Mercedes” in honour of the car.
2. The Logo
The three-pointed star, now synonymous with the Mercedes-Benz brand, was initially used as a symbol of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), one of the companies that eventually merged to form Mercedes-Benz.
The three points of the star represent land, sea, and air, which are the three areas that the company’s engines were designed to power.
They considered changing the design to include a fourth point to symbolise space at one point but decided against it.
3. The First Car
The first car produced under the Mercedes-Benz name was the 35 hp, released in 1901. Equipped with a four-cylinder engine and a top speed of 55 km/h, people considered the car quite advanced for its time and was
4. The Fastest Car
Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to speed, and the brand has produced several of the fastest cars in the world. One of the fastest cars ever produced by Mercedes-Benz is the AMG GT Black Series, which can reach a top speed of 325 km/h.
5. The Most Expensive Car
While Mercedes-Benz has produced several expensive cars over the years, the most costly is the Maybach Exelero.
Mercedes produced the car in 2004 and sold it for $8 million. However, they only made one, which rapper Birdman purchased.
6. The Iconic G-Class
The G-Class, also known as the G-Wagon, has become an icon in the world of luxury SUVs. Mercedes first produced The car in 1979, and its design has remained unchanged for over four decades. Despite its boxy appearance, the G-Class is highly sought after for its off-road capabilities and luxurious interior.
7. The Electric Future
Mercedes-Benz has invested heavily in electric vehicles recently, with plans to have an entirely electric lineup by 2030.
The brand’s flagship electric vehicle is the EQS, released in 2021, which features an impressive range of up to 770 kilometres on a single charge.
8. The AMG Division
Mercedes-Benz is known for producing some of the most high-performance vehicles in the world, thanks in large part to its AMG division.
AMG was originally an independent engineering firm that specialised in performance tuning for Mercedes-Benz cars, but Mercedes-Benz eventually purchased the brand and became an official division of the company.
AMG was born over 50 years ago by two men passionate about motorsports. Founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the company was entirely separate from Mercedes-Benz but is now a massive part of the business.
9. The Iconic Mercedes Silver Colour
The recognisable shade of silver came from a quick decision. In 1934 at the Nürburgring, their aluminium-bodied W 25 race car had to be under 750 kg to race, but it came in at one kg over. The team manager decided to have the paint taken off, resulting in a sparkling silver racer that ended up winning.
10. The Global Reach
Mercedes-Benz is a truly global brand, with production facilities and dealerships in countries worldwide. The brand is in over 200 countries and sells over two million cars annually.
