Originally planned for 2040, in November 2020 the government announced that they were bringing the petrol and diesel ban forwards to 2030. With only 8 years until this comes into effect we thought we’d share the lowdown.

What is being banned?

2030 will be the phase-out date for the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans. The ban will only apply to new cars so you will still be able to drive your petrol or diesel car for as long as you need to. You will also still be able to buy second-hand petrol and diesel cars too.

From 2030 to 2035 new cars and vans can be sold if they have the capability to drive a significant distance with zero emissions (for example, plug-in hybrids or full hybrids) and then after 2035 all new cars will need to be electric or hydrogen-powered.

Why are new petrol and diesel cars being banned?

The government has an overall strategy to cut carbon emissions in the UK with the commitment that they will drop to net zero by 2050. To reach this goal the government has to cut emissions from transport which is why the ban has been introduced.

What is the plan for hybrid cars?

You will be able to buy a new hybrid car after the petrol and diesel ban comes into effect in 2030. These can be sold until 2035 when all new cars will have to be fully electric or hydrogen-powered.

Will we have enough electric chargepoints in 2030?

Part of the government announcement in 2020 was a £1.3 billion to accelerate the roll-out of chargepoints for electric vehicles in homes, streets and on motorways. The aim is for charging vehicles to feel like second nature and part of everyday life. To meet future demand the movement is providing grants for homeowners, businesses and local authorities to install chargepoints.

Should I buy an electric car now?

The move towards electric vehicles is clear as the government wants to encourage drivers to move towards less polluting cars however you can still buy a new petrol, diesel or hybrid car until 2030 and can still drive it after the ban comes into force.
